First Mission
The first job for Captain Cook was to search for Tahiti in the large stretch of the Pacific Ocean because his mission was to investigate Venus crossing the sun.
On 17 August 1768 the Endeavour sailed out of Plymouth.
There were sailors, shipmen, gunners, artists and marines on board. The astronomer, Charles Green was there to help with the scientific measurements and Joseph Banks, the botanist, was also part of the group.
They faced strong winds in the Bay of Biscay which made some of the crew seasick.
However James Cook was not one of them because he was very excited about his first journey as captain and navigator of the Endeavour.
