A BOY WITH A PLAN
On 27 October 1728 James Cook was born and grew up in Yorkshire England as a farm worker’s son.
At that time education was only for the people with a lot of money. James Cook was very lucky because his father’s boss had noticed that he was smart at mathematics and paid for his early schooling.
One of his first jobs was as a shop assistant at a store in the port of Staithes. The owner Mr Sanderson introduced James to Mr Walker who owned a coal ship. James began his plans to become a seaman and was soon on an adventure sailing from Whitby to London.
Mr Walker noticed how quickly Cook worked out how to run a ship and said he could become captain but instead Cook joined the Royal Navy at age 27.
There were rumours about going to war with France so Cook took advantage of the opportunities in the navy. He had only been on the HMS Eagle for a short time when he progressed from Able Seaman to Master’s Mate.
Cook was sticking to his plan.
