Introducing A World Navigator, Explorer and Mapmaker
This term, the Year Four students of Orana Catholic Primary School, Western Australia are investigating the life and first journey of Captain James Cook on board the Endeavour.
To launch our learning journey the teachers invited well-known West Australian author, historian and educator Mike Lefroy to visit our classroom. Mike was heavily involved in projects to build replicas of the Endeavour and the Duyfken. Being an expert he had a lot to tell us.
Mike mesmerised us with his knowledge about world explorers and their ships and maps, as well as, his stories about how the replicas were built honouring the original methods of boat building.
Our investigation will be both interesting and challenging as we use our laptops to develop our technology skills and enhance our understanding of history. We will reconstruct Cook's journey to Australia and animate it using the knowledge we have gathered.

G’day All
Fabulous website! Congratulations.
We have been in the UK now for 10 weeks and flying home tomorrow. We managed a “Cook’s Tour” to Whitby and other places nearby which played a significant part in James' early life. When we visited Roseberry Topping - the hill at the back of the farm where he grew up - a van pulled alongside us with a very significant name on it!(see below). It was from the peak of Roseberry Topping that young James Cook would have seen the sea for the first time - an event that must have aroused his curiosity and kindled his desire to go to sea.
I look forward to reading your website in detail over the next few days.
Best wishes
Mike
